Safety guidelines for meetups
HPG Gear Exchange is a venue — every transaction happens directly between buyer and seller. Use common sense and these guidelines to keep meetups safe.
Meet in a public place
Coffee shops, the rink lobby, a busy grocery store parking lot. Never invite strangers to your home, and never go to theirs.
Use a Safe Exchange Zone
Many police stations have designated, camera-monitored swap zones open 24/7. Search '<your city> safe exchange zone' or 'community safe trade spot'.
Stick to daylight hours
Schedule meetups during the day. If it has to be after dark, pick a well-lit, busy location.
Bring a friend
A second person dramatically reduces risk. Share the meetup location, time, and the other person's profile link with someone who isn't going.
Keep messages in-app
In-app messages create a record we can review if something goes wrong. Be wary of anyone who immediately pushes to move to text/WhatsApp/email.
Cash or trackable payment only
Cash in person is safest. If using digital payment, prefer methods with buyer/seller records. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, and crypto — those are classic scam tells.
Inspect before you pay
Try on skates. Flex the stick. Check straps and shells for cracks. Confirm sizes. If the item doesn't match the listing, walk away.
Red flags
• "I can't meet — I'll ship it if you send payment first."
• Price way below market with urgency ("must sell today").
• Refuses to share photos of specific details, serial numbers, or wear.
• Asks for gift cards, wire transfer, crypto, or Zelle to a stranger.
• Pushes to move communication off the platform immediately.
If anything feels off, walk away and use the Report button on the listing or profile.
